To transport heavy armor and troops across the English Channel, Willy Messerschmitt developed the Me 321 Gigant, a massive 40-ton glider with a 180-foot wingspan constructed in just fourteen weeks at Leipheim. Towed initially by single Junkers Ju 90 transports and later by a perilous Troika-Schlepp formation of three Bf 110 heavy fighters, the aircraft proved immensely hazardous to fly, as confirmed by famed test pilot Hanna Reitsch. When operations shifted to the Eastern Front and North Africa, the airframe was upgraded into the six-engine Me 323, powered by French Gnome-Rhône radial engines, yet these slow transports suffered devastating losses to Allied fighters. As the conflict intensified, technological development accelerated across all fronts. Alongside Allied coastal trials involving the Great Panjandrum and the successful Sherman Crab flail tank, German engineers introduced midget submarines, autogyros, and guided ordnance. The rocket-powered Henschel Hs 293 glide bomb demonstrated early precision strike capabilities in the Mediterranean, while both Britain and Germany developed specialized bouncing bombs, Highball and Kurt, for anti-shipping operations. Meanwhile, aerial reconnaissance directed by photographic interpreters at RAF Medmenham tracked secret German flight test programs at Peenemünde and Rechlin. These investigations uncovered Alexander Lippisch’s radical delta-wing Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet. Rocketing to 30,000 feet in minutes under the power of volatile T-Stoff and C-Stoff propellants, the Komet approached the sound barrier but posed extreme danger to its own pilots due to corrosive chemical leaks and explosive landing characteristics.
