Despite formal protests from the League of Nations, Japan withdrew from international oversight, subsequently broadening military operations into northern China. By 1937, the conflict escalated into full-scale war, marked by intense aerial bombardments of civilian centers and bitter resistance by Chinese forces under Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, who traded vast geographical space for time.
