Wing-propelled diving birds flap their wings to move through air and water. Yet the design trade-offs, physical adaptations, and kinematics required to operate across these largely different conditions remain a mystery.
To close this knowledge gap, researchers compared data gathered from diving birds with experiments using their robot, where they analyzed what drove successful aerial-aquatic movement.
These findings provide further insight into how both birds and robots navigate multiple fluids and transition between them.
