Around 7,000 years ago, in what is now Romania, two small clay figures were crafted, that look surprisingly modern. One is known as The Thinker, a seated man with his head in hands, seemingly lost in contemplation, or perhaps resigned to sadness. Beside him is the Sitting Woman, seeming composed and perhaps observant. They come from the Hamangia culture, a Neolithic society that lived along the western Black Sea coast between about 5250 BC and 4,500 BC.
