Women of the Reich

In 1942, a new phase of the genocide took place: the ""Final Solution"". Women, far from being mere witnesses or accomplices, played a role as important as it was deadly. Whether within the occupation administration in charge of organizing the deportation of millions of European Jews to the concentration and extermination camps; behind the watchtowers of the camps, where the female guards learned violence at the expense of the prisoners; within the medical units where barbaric experiments were carried out on the deportees; or even in the intimacy of the families, where some SS wives became criminals themselves. Although some of them, particularly involved in Nazi crimes, were to answer for their acts after the war, the justice system was unable to acknowledge the involvement of German women, and the vast majority of their crimes went unpunished. The women of the Reich slipped through the judicial net and began a new life, as if the war had been a simple parenthesis. It would take decades for the work of historians to finally shed light on this little-known part of the Holocaust, and question this unspoken and unimagined side of women, and the violence they are capable of.
