Elephant Calf Linh Mai’s Social Circle Grows

An update from Robbie Clark, elephant manager and acting curator of Elephant Trails. It is hard to believe our Asian elephant calf, Linh Mai, is already five weeks old. While her first month was one of ups and downs, I am happy to share she continues to make progress in socializing with her herdmates and, with her recalibrated formula and fecal microbiota transplant, is making good weight gains. We continue to work toward the goal of having Linh Mai raised by her mother, Nhi Linh, within her multigenerational herd. At the same time, It is important for all members of our elephant herd to become acquainted with Linh Mai. Swarna, Rani and Spike are no exception. Introductions among Linh Mai and the adults occur on a daily basis with a variety of elephants. Every day is different! As mentioned in our Feb. 25 update, Linh Mai’s relationship with her “auntie” Swarna has blossomed into something special. Swarna displays just the right balance of “maternal care” along with giving Linh Mai some independence. Lately, they have been exploring the Elephant Community Center together. Linh Mai has a blast running all over the habitat, splashing through the pool and trumpeting in excitement. Swarna, who is around 52 years old, does her best to keep up with Linh Mai—who is a bundle of energy! She gives the calf room to explore while staying close enough to keep an eye on her.
