Restored in 4K from original 1989 archival film, this documentary examines the integrated air defense architecture of Alaskan Air Command, the Alaska NORAD Region, and the unified Alaskan Command during the closing chapter of the Cold War. As Soviet Long-Range Aviation surged from fewer than five Arctic sorties per year in the early 1980s to nearly fifty annually, North American defense planners shifted focus toward intercepting Tu-95 Bear-H cruise missile carriers before weapon release over the Beaufort Sea or northern Canada—while preparing for fighter-versus-fighter engagements against long-range MiG-31 Foxhounds capable of reaching Anchorage. The film follows the complete operational chain across Alaska's vast theater. At Elmendorf Air Force Base, the 43rd and 54th Tactical Fighter Squadrons fly F-15C Eagles fitted with upgraded radar and conformal fuel tanks, practicing air combat maneuvering in western Alaska's Stony airspace. At Eielson Air Force Base, the 18th Tactical Fighter Squadron operates A-10 Thunderbolt II ground-attack aircraft over ice-slick runways in perpetual winter twilight, while maintenance teams from the 21st and 343rd Wings pioneer cold-weather procedures at minus 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Aerial refueling over the 800-mile-deep landmass is sustained by KC-135 tankers from SAC's 6th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing and the Alaskan Air National Guard's 168th Air Refueling Squadron. Command and control flows through Top ROCC at Elmendorf, where the 744th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron links 21 ground radars—including Tatalina's geodesic dome facility—via geosynchronous SATCOM and meteor-burst communications. Airborne surveillance is multiplied by the 962nd Squadron's Boeing E-3 Sentry AWACS, scanning 2.5 million square miles and training with B-1B Lancers and Canadian CF-18s to counter the Tu-160 Blackjack. Finally, from Galena's 6,600-foot runway near historic World War II Lend-Lease hangars, F-15s, tankers, and AWACS execute a live six-hour intercept of a Soviet Tu-95 Bear over the polar ice.
