Restored WWII in Color: The Pacific War, The Relentless March of American Naval Aviation

In 1943, a new generation of American naval air power took wing over the Atlantic to join the Essex-class aircraft carrier known to history as the Fighting Lady. This archival documentary chronicles the complete trajectory of the Pacific air-sea campaign from 1943 to 1945, following US Navy carrier squadrons, surface battlefleets, and strategic bombers across seven thousand miles of ocean toward the Japanese home islands. The journey begins on the flight deck with the Grumman F6F Hellcat, powered by a 2,000-horsepower Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp engine and armed with six .50-caliber machine guns calibrated to converge at 300 yards. Alongside TBF Avenger torpedo planes and SB2C Helldiver dive bombers, nearly 100 aircraft operate from a single hull using hydraulic catapults, folding wings, and arresting gear guided by the Landing Signal Officer. Below decks, 3,000 sailors, Marines, and airmen—85 percent of them wartime volunteers—train under their veteran Annapolis captain before transiting the Panama Canal. On August 30, 1943, the carrier launches its opening strike against Marcus Island before pushing into the Marshall Islands at Kwajalein in early 1944. Next comes the two-day, 1,000-plane assault against Japan's heavily fortified anchorage at Truk Lagoon, captured through synchronized gun cameras and dramatic deck recoveries. Operating within Task Force 58 under Vice Admiral Marc Mitscher, the fleet steams into the Marianas, intercepting a four-engine Kawanishi Emily flying boat, bombarding Guam and Tinian alongside the battleships Colorado, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania, and downing 369 enemy aircraft in a single day during the Marianas Turkey Shoot before striking the Imperial Japanese Fleet in the Battle of the Philippine Sea. From newly captured Marianas runways, Boeing B-29 Superfortresses rise into the stratosphere to strike Tokyo, while 1,400 Allied vessels advance to within 325 miles of Kyushu for the Easter Sunday 1945 invasion of Okinawa. Enduring three months of relentless kamikaze attacks, the fleet destroys 4,232 enemy planes to secure victory.
