WWII in Color: B-26 Marauders, D-Day Normandy & B-17 Flak Armor. Rare Restored Archival Footage

Experience the operational reality of the 1944 European Theater through restored, upscaled, and colorized archival combat film, chronicling the tactical medium bombers of the Ninth Air Force, the combined-arms assault of D-Day, and the life-saving innovations of the Eighth Air Force. After an opening overview of the lethal aerial gauntlet over occupied Europe, the first chapter examines a full two-mission day with Ninth Air Force Martin B-26 Marauder squadrons operating out of English airfields. Maintaining strict radio silence and flying tight defensive formations, the Marauders strike a German twin-engine fighter airfield under intense antiaircraft fire. Several aircraft nurse damaged airframes back across the water on a single engine, culminating in a textbook emergency landing by the base's youngest pilot—just 19 years old—whose hydraulic lines were severed by shrapnel. Within three-quarters of an hour, ground ordnance teams load 500-pound bombs, mechanics service the engines, and the crews launch at 15-second intervals for an afternoon raid on a Luftwaffe airfield in Holland, with Hawker Typhoon fighters guarding crippled stragglers on the return leg. The second act chronicles the launch of the Normandy Invasion in early June 1944. Delayed twenty-four hours by rough seas in the English Channel, British, Canadian, and American forces embark under an umbrella of relentless aerial interdiction against German radar sites, rail yards, bridges, and coastal casemates. As paratroopers and glider infantry lift off from British strips in the pre-dawn darkness, battleships, cruisers, and destroyers shell the French shoreline. Viewers witness the sinking of the destroyer USS Corry one mile off the beach, the arrival of sea-going Sherman tanks, street fighting through fortified coastal towns, the capture of German garrisons, and the evacuation of wounded personnel back to Britain. The final segment takes viewers inside an Eighth Air Force briefing room to examine the development of aircrew body armor. Surgeon Brigadier General Malcolm C. Grow explains how data showing 80 percent of combat wounds stemmed from low-velocity flak and 20mm fragments led him to traditional swordsmiths in London. From factory stamping of manganese plates to B-17 bailout procedures using quick-release ripcords, medical records prove how these canvas-covered steel vests brought airmen safely home.
