About 130 million years ago, when giant dinosaurs stalked the earth, a mysterious mammal scurried across a damp sand dune in what is today southern Brazil.
Mammals at that time were usually small and skittish, the better to avoid sharp teeth and reproduce quickly. But the fossilized tracks from this ancient critter suggest it grew big enough to hold its own against at least some of its dino contemporaries.
Indeed, based on two sets of fossilized footprints, the creature in question could be the largest mammal to ever live alongside the dinosaurs, researchers reported in a recent study.
