From a Mojave Napkin Sketch to Aviation Immortality: The True Story of the Rutan Voyager

On the frosty morning of December 14, 1986, at Edwards Air Force Base, the Rutan Model 76 Voyager began a lumbering takeoff roll that nearly ended in catastrophe. Loaded with fuel to a gross weight of 9,694 pounds on an empty carbon-fiber airframe weighing just 939 pounds, its flexible wings sagged until the wingtips ground against the concrete runway. Inside the tiny 33-inch-high cockpit sat Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager, setting out to conquer the last great milestone in atmospheric aviation: flying around the world nonstop and unrefueled. This restored archival documentary traces the chronological journey of the Voyager from its origins in California. The story begins in 1978 when pilot Jeana Yeager, working for rocket engineer Bob Truax, attended an airshow in Chino to inspect a Rutan VariEze and met Vietnam combat veteran and test pilot Dick Rutan. Moving to Mojave Airport, the pair joined friends Mike and Sally Melvill to build two Rutan Long-EZ aircraft in 1981, setting world distance records before seeking a larger challenge. Over dinner that year, Dick’s younger brother, aircraft designer Burt Rutan, calculated that high-performance graphite, fiberglass, and aramid composites could yield a structure light enough to carry three-quarters of its weight in fuel, sketching the Voyager on a napkin. Without corporate backing, the team formed Voyager Impressive People and spent three years with crew chief Bruce Evans building the delicate aircraft in Hangar 77. After a June 22, 1984 maiden flight on temporary Lycoming engines, testing revealed severe longitudinal instability when heavy, a terrifying 1984 storm encounter en route to Oshkosh, and seven in-flight emergencies. Despite a romantic breakup three months before launch, Dick and Jeana departed Edwards with new liquid-cooled and air-cooled Teledyne Continental engines and King avionics. Over nine grueling days, they survived lost winglets, 72 hours of initial sleeplessness, fuel gauge mysteries, a failed autopilot near the Philippines, hypoxia at 20,000 feet over Africa, an Atlantic thunderstorm roll, and a night fuel pump failure off Mexico before touching down with mere gallons to spare.
