Restoring a Rare Pearl Harbor Aircraft Survivor

Adam Savage visits@airandspace's Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar for an up-close look at a truly remarkable aircraft: the Sikorsky JRS-1. The only surviving aircraft in the museum’s collection that was stationed at Pearl Harbor during the attack on Dec. 7, 1941, this unarmed twin-engine amphibian flying boat has a truly fascinating story to tell. Aeronautics curator Tom Paone and museum specialist Richard Snell describe the delicate process of preserving the aircraft’s original materials, the many secrets still being uncovered, and the unique challenges of restoring a nearly 90-year-old flying boat.
