Y-chromosome haplogroups allow scientists to follow paternal lineages passed from father to son across thousands of generations. Mutations create new branches but haplogroup represents only one line of ancestry and not someone’s complete genetics, ethnicity, culture or language. Maternal lineages can similarly be traced through mitochondrial DNA, while autosomal DNA provides a much broader picture of our ancestry.
